Discman is a dangerous instrument.

Discman is a dangerous instrument.

For that reason, any mobile music instrument that pops music only to your ears is dodgy. On a rather dull day, in the middle of a morning bus journey, when you listen to Illayaraja on discman, especially during a very enjoyable song like Andhi Mazhai[Raaja Paarvai], you might loose track of what’s happening around you. Ecstatic. That very moment, you get a sudden irresistible urge to get up from your seats and just shout that song with arms wide open. Man, It would have been out of senses today, to do that.

Kettana Iravugal Suttana Kanavugal
Emaigalum Sumyadi Illamayiley !!…. Discman is a dangerous instrument, I tell you.

  1. Guru,

thanneeril moozhghi konde dhaagam enbaai πŸ˜‰

    Kalakkitte. Super post.

BTW yesday in Raj TV, they were showing the felicitation program for K Balachandar.

Many people including Rajni, Kamal, Sivakumar, Kavignar vaali and all were there. But SPB stole the show.

He sung one stanza from almost all the movies he has worked for KB. Songs like keladi kanmani, enna saththam indha neram, kamban emandhan, vannam konda vennilave, mannil indha kaadhalindri, kaadhal rojave, vaan nila nila alla and some more. And he ended with ‘tere meere beech mein kaisa hai bandhan’. Aaaha kavidhai kavidhai. Abirami abirami!!!
If you had been here, you would have enjoyed that for sure boss!

  2. kannukkul mullai vaithu yaar thaithathu…

    1) enthan vaanin kadhal nilavu “kadhal virus”:
while travelling in a car on a freeway

    2) Ilaya nila “payanangal mudivadhiillay”, Nilavae vaa “Pudhiya mugam”:
while star gazing on the rooof or on the lawn at night

    3) Kodaikalae katre, ini thendral paadum paatae “don’t remember the title”:
    while its raining outside

    4) Maravirundhu naalum “nizhagal”:
while its sunny and lots of activity around you

    5) Pazhamudhir cholai “Varusham padhinaru”:
while riding on a cycle (bike) in a reserve forest

innum ethanayo nenaivugal,.. ragathirkku manam irukkiradhaaa, illay paatukku urir irukkiradhaaa?

  4. Yes! Felt like that at least a thousand times in my life especially when listening to soulful compositions.

  5. Arvind
“Kodaikalae katre, ini thendral paadum paatae ” is from Paneer Pushpangal.
Sung By Malaysia Vasudevan. I’ll say that it is one of his best (atleast among his top 5) songs. Definitely one of the very few touching songs sung by MV, “Thenkizhakku Seemaiyila…’ being another one.

  6. “Ovvoru thuliyilum un mugam therigirathu”
Raja asked: How can a blind man sing like this?
    Donno what was Diamond’s reply!

  7. TRUE!!! TRUE!!

I hit the same spot today when my iPod was humming along with me this song :
“Oru naal oru kanavu adhai naan marakkavum mudiyadhu….
    Nijamai irukiradhu idhupol …”

    Magic Magic!!!

Illayaraja = Enchantment ..no other equation to this great!!!!

  8. “Ovvoru thuliyilum un mugam therigirathu”
Dear prabhu..u gotta watch daredevil for that explanation..there is a very good scene where ben affleck(blind super hero) asks jennifer garnet(super sexy super heroine) to stand in the rain so he can visualise her looks by listening to the rain drops on her making some internal mumbo jumbo audio coordinate mapping and finally the viewer gets to see jen thro ben’s eye..i think thats what that poet was trying to say.. I guess..whatever the case ..i think its brilliant potrayl..i wonder if the blind people have such brilliant perception..

  9. Prabhu, Thats was so nice of SPB. I missed it, you bet.

    Ram, V.Muthu’s best.

Arvind/Maverick, Thanks for reminding me Kodaikalae katre, ini thendral paadum paatae. The only song that I need in Seattle. Its rains like nobody’s business.

Prabhu V. Point taken. Good question. Girish’s comparison to ben affleck’s dare devil was coming closer. Truly never know what Vairamuthu would have answered.

  10. Lazy, On my blog, I recently had a post on my favorite song sequences(rather than just the song itself) in Tamil cinema. ‘Andhi Mazhai…’ was top of my list too and the post also has 4 of my other favs. Hope u and other readers can check it out sometime πŸ™‚

  14. Dear Guru:I am not sure whether a walk-man or disc-man is so very dangerous but sure is embarassing.I used to love the gadget because I could enjoy the music whether film, light, carnatic or gazal without disturbing others. But once on my way to Trichy in Pallavan I was hearing Bala Mural’s “Thanga Radham Vandadu” in the walk-man that I did not notice the T.T.E asking for my ticket. My neighbour virtually shook me up.I apolagised for my indifferance.
“Andhi mazhai pozhigirathu ovvoru thuliyilum un mugam therigirathu” is a beautiful mood song
The songs suggested by Sapphani are quite good especially”AgAya gangai””Raathiriyil poothirukkum thAmarai thAn penno” etc
Best wishes for a happy New Year. Partha krish

  16. i lost that document but i once wrote an article titled “Ennai Marandhu Vitten” (an obvious reference to the “Kannalaney” song) where i listed the songs that captured my imagination just by the virtue of meaningful lines…i’ll reel off a few (BY NO MEANS, IS IT A COMPREHENSIVE LIST) titles– satham ilaatha thanimai kaetten, poongaatru thirumbuma, mounathil vilaiyaadum manasaakshiye, kanaa kaanum kangall mella, malarndhu malaraadha, kalaivaaniye, nee paathi naan paathi kanney, kaadhal rojave, nalam vaazha, elorum sollum paatu…the list goes on…

  17. Hey LG, i have the Raj Tv KBalachandar function on my pc. If there is any way to send it to you, let me know.

  18. Lazy,

Did you hear Netaji – The forgotten hero’s soundtrack? ARR is amazing!!

Can’t wait to read your review on the soundtrack!

  19. ARR,period movies and patriotism – Killer combo. Bose – The Forgotten Hero proves it yet again.

  20. propecia There is no history of mankind, there are only many histories of all kinds of aspects of human life. And one of these is the history of political power. This is elevated into the history of the world.
