Cool Song Crappy Video 3

Mani Ratnam should certainly be taxed for this. It has been my long time grouse on this song and the way it was made. While Andha Arabic Kadaloram isn’t certainly crappy as per Tamil cinema standards, I still think Mani Ratnam didn’t do justice to Rahman’s original number.

We all agree, that there was a good lead to the song, with Arvind Swamy and his beloved wife Manisha, kind-of spending their first time together in an apt after their marriage. As Arvind Swamy starts the heat, Manisha is still artificially shy, from the touch of her husband.

I think that’s a brilliant lead for a music composer and even the director to insert a song(yes, Indian cinema still believes in inserting songs and not making songs happen naturally). As the edit happens from the closed apt to an open location, it transforms smoothly with the shot of Sonali Bendre being unveiled from a translucent silky cloth and Nagendra Prasad shaking his head in a slow-kinda-motion.

Until that very second when Manisha loosens herself and starts to make some silly dance movements, the song sort of wades through easily. Right after this, the shots gets distributed irregularly between the actual dance situation and the apartment. All of a sudden, we see the odd smoke from the room when Arvind Swamy starts to dance, taking away the thrill of that pleasant moment.

Right at the end, when the notes increase to the next level, you see all that flames in front of the camera. What was Mani thinking ?

Even before I saw this song on screen, I was so impressed by the song and was imagining a different picturisation of this song. Probably my expectations weren’t met. I spoke to the Manager of Madras Talkies during the release and he echoed the same thought that the song didn’t come out as expected. They wanted Nagendra Prasad to slim down before the shoot and that didn’t happen. There was also news in the media that Rahman wasn’t so happy about the picturisation of the song, given his effort. Not just in composing but he lent his own voice to the song.

Overall a pretty shabby effort from one of the best directors of Indian Cinema. Not just shabby, it just spoiled a great number of Rahman’s early days. I wish Mani Ratnam reshot the whole song for his future movies.

Trivia : During the initial release of the music album of Bombay, the random rap bits of Rahman like Shighana Pagana Pagana tho tho weren’t included in the song and it was certainly a surprise to see it on screen. Just before 200th day of Bombay in select theatres, the second version of music album was released which had these rap bits and two extra bit songs, Malarodu Malar and Idhu Annai Bhoomi.

The previous blogpost on Aamir Khan dropping his smoking, had some clarity issues, mostly on my part and the rest, also on me. It has happened here numerous times on this blog and thats partly the fun of blogging.

Blogging ? Seven years ago, if you had asked me the question, I would have blinked and walked past you. But not anymore. Ever since I read that small piece of article on rediff about 60 people reading Mahesh Shantharam‘s personal site, my life changed, quite a bit. I was actually on my way of becoming a writer, perhaps a blogger.

If you want the nerve-wracking, nail-bitting, edge-of-you-seats, tour de force story about this blog, scribbles of a lazy geek, here you go.

Seven years of living with an avatar(in words of World of Warcraft), that really didn’t mean anything to me at the time of its creation, wasn’t very tough as I thought it would be. The nom de guerre, lazy geek, was too cofusing for many to assosiate with kollywood film reviews, music and some fine arts crap. Once they found it was some one named Guru Subramanian, their interest levels dropped. And that was funny !!

Folks have called me by names, the ones that you wouldn’t like to be addressed on a private email. Some have called me names here in the comment space, warned me for harsh criticisms of their super heroes and their films. Some even called as it as the Worst Popular Indian Blog. Neverthless the nicer things have outscored the handful of critics.

Readers have always thanked for interesting content(?!) on this blog, commented ferociously to fight the comment trolls, ringed me to wish birthdays, anniversaries & milestones, become lifelong friends and also voted this blog thrice in a row, at the Indibloggies.

And above all, what I have learnt by running a blog, six long years(yeah yeah, I hear you. It’s only five. I was out for a year on sabbatical) couldn’t be achieved in anyway shorter than this. Thank You !!

Stop Smoking !!

First things first… I have just smoked my last cigarette before sending this post. YES I HAVE FINALLY KICKED THE BAD HABIT!!! I know I know, I can already hear all of y’all scream and shout. I was supposed to give up on 31st. But I didn’t (which is one of the reasons I was avoiding posting). I tried my best… but I”m sorry I couldn’t then… but I have now… so please don’t give me grief… instead support me now.

Second step: get back to sleeping early.

Third: Work out religiously.

4th: Get back on my healthy diet.

5th: Just stick to the above 4 for a while before taking the 5th step.

Stop Smoking, follow Aamir Khan and if possible, his blog.

P.S – Previously, Stop Smoking Shahrukh.

P.P.S – For the folks who think the above para was my experience. It isn’t about me stoping to smoke. It’s a quote/unquote from Aam’r blog. That was my mistake to make it as a subtle quote.

I have gone crazy in the past few weeks. As nidhi, mentions it, writers love movies. That includes a short story writer who are small timers like me. Well, i’ve completed the sequel to my orginal short story named the duplicate dream. I am the only writer probably who would have written a sequel to a short story. My ideas of making this a trilogy is at the back of my mind. I wish I could meet David Davidar to publish this short story. Currently, I need to WATCH MOVIES. 🙁 But here i am in my office cublicle on a monday morning preparing for a technology presentaion scheduled this afternoon. Well, who said software engineers don’t day dream.

I have actually been off from writing blogs for 2 full weeks. I miss them a lot. Quite a lot to write of the past week’s experiences. I swear by the moon and the stars to write a lot on my blog. Hope i do !!

I wrote that blogpost on April 22, 2002.

I only wish, I can get back to my early blogging days. Raw, naive and unfettered.

I wrote that blogpost on July 30, 2005.

Its 2008 now, nearly six years after that 2002 post was written. And today, I would love to write a blogpost just like April 2002(with all that spell/grammatical errors) but all I could do is only repeat what was written as of July 2005. You get it ?

Cool Song Crappy Video 2

While I’m aware of the limitations that come along with Rajini in dance sequences, I still think Shankar didn’t do a good job in picturizing this peppy tune of Rahman. Not just that but Rahman lent his voice for this cool number and it had zero creativity.

While listening to this number on the earphone, I particularly enjoy Rahman modulation while he sings,”Naan Naan Naan Superman Thaan” line. Unfortunately, it wasn’t used too well in the movie. Shankar would have been better off making a complete animated song(ofcourse there is this new found graphics studio by Aishwarya which can be profited) transorming Rajini from Billa / Ranga / Baasha to Superman and Spiderman. Would have proved to be a great curtain raiser to Rajini’s Sultan. Something that Kamalhassan tried briefly in Aalavandhaan.

Instead of doing something like that, Shankar and team resorted to doing silly gimmicks with the gun, which Shankar himself had earlier experimented in Mukkala Muqabla song. Pathetic.

Just when I typed Aalavandhaan, I realized this was a Rajini blogpost, following a Kamal one. And this sequence of Rajini blogpost following a Kamal one or viceversa has been happening on this blog for quite sometime. And honestly, sathiyama, I didn’t realize it until now. Man, there seems to be a ghost residing in this blog. Run…..

Rush Hour near Nehru Stadium

That is what the newspapers would read the next day, after the launch of Kamal’s Dasavatharam audio album, when Jackie Chan himself will be present to felicitate the occasion. Jackie Chan has a huge fan following in Tamil Nadu and so expect long lines. Its going to be a doorbuster deal at Nehru stadium to get to see the duo.

Galatta reports, that Jackie Chan was said to be “overwhelmed by Kamal’s amazing performance, Chan is believed to have agreed immediately to the proposal”.

Kamal adds to the already growing hype – “It is the biggest project I’ve done. It is the longet project I’ve done and its the hardest project I’ve done.”

More about Jackie Chan’s attendance-

In addition, he also organized a party in Hong Kong to announce his confirmation. The Dasavatharam audio launch is all set to become a gala affair, one of the biggest the Indian film industry has ever seen. Already, Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai and ‘Mega Star’ Chiranjeevi have agreed to grace the function. The audio launch will be held in Chennai’s Nehru Stadium in the second week of March.

Everything seems perfect. Kamal is excited. KS Ravi Kumar is excited. Sujatha has always been excited about Dasavatharam. But my only bother is Himesh Reshammiya. Let’s see how he fares on this one.

Spilled Milk

Jayabharathi, the director of famous 70’s flick Kudisai, who changed some perspectives for Tamil Cinema, cries over spilled milk. In his recent interview to Vikatan, he says that over the last couple of decades, he has been a believer of good Tamil cinema, but it hasn’t reaped many fruits for him.

Having approached more than dozen tamil cinema ‘artists’ including Vadivelu, Vivek, Prakashraj and Rajinikanth, he hasn’t had success converting those meetings into offer for a film.

I’ve haven’t watched Kudisai but I have come across few people(artsy types) swearing on the film to be a one of the few modern Tamil films. Every two months, in Vikatan or Kumudam, there is an old Tamil Cinema technician, a director or crew member, cribs about being left behind with no money to run his life. Its easy to classify him as a loser but there is another angle to it. Irrespective of who cribs about it, the fact remains that cinema isn’t just about art, even in the past. What fuels the handful of good Tamil cinema every year, are those masala flicks that make tons of money.

It’s business guys. Not just some dream sequence like the song, Madai Thiranthu Thaavum Nadhi Alai Naan(one of my all-time favorites). Dreams of good cinema end up being painful and it hurts. It even ruins ones career. Meet Mr. Jayabharathi

And those lines from Madai Thiranthu, “இசைக்கென இசைகின்ற ரசிகர்கள் ராஜ்ஜியம்” is a bloody myth, dude.

How to start a rumor

When I first read that Kunal committed suicide, I thought that someone thoughtful will create a connection to Monal’s suicide. Well, I wasn’t trying to be cynical because it did happen. Kunal and Monal(Simran’s sister) acted together in the movie Paarvai Ondre Pothumey.

Indiglitz sports filmbuffs in-house and they quickly made a connection.

It is sheer coincidence that the heroine of the film ‘Paarvai Onre Pothumey’ Monal too had committed suicide.

Now that someone kick-started the rumor head, I would expect the astrologers union to jump in an take-over from here. They can potentially analyze the chemistry between Kunal and Monal. Incidentally(or spiritually) Kunal and Monal have the ‘nal’ as the ending syllable of their first name. Numerology can be used here. Since they both came from the north west of Chennai, astrology of directions can be put to vigorous analysis.

The IT experts can do data mining of all the celebrities who have commited sucides in the last few years and can publish white papers declaring the resulting pattern matches and suprising ‘findings’.

Media, Enjoy the celebrity’s death.

I unplugged the frustating re-Captcha thingy and installed the Akismet Plugin for Movable Type and the spam is all gone. While reCaptcha was good enough to keep the spammers away, it also kept the commenters away, specially me. Because I was so bored to comment on this blog myself.

Akismet hasn’t let even a single spam comment as legitimate in the last 2 weeks or so. So far so good. And it did catch 300+ spam comments. I’ve been cribbing about spam for more than 3 years now and atleast I’m getting some peace.

I love you spammers and please get me more spam !!
